April Horse of the Month-Quarter Horse
The Quarter Horse is the most popular horse breed in North America. It was used (and still is) for racing a short distance and sprinting forward at amazing speeds. Once longer distance racing was in favor, Thoroughbreds took over that spot but people found out what other work it was good for. The Quarter horse was an excellent ranch horse and was great at rounding up cows and other livestock on the ranch. They are not only good for ranch work but is also good in competitions such as jumping.
There was a pony at my stable for a while named Pee-wee, which was a perfect name for him, and he is a Quarter Horse. I got to ride him for a few weeks and he was so precious! He was 4-years old he was cremello and he didn’t have any shoes on so it sounded like he was tip-toeing through the stable. His hooves were gray and there was no problem cleaning out his hooves because even when I brush down his legs he would lift his foot up like he thought I wanted to clean out his hooves. He was so sweet – he was one of the most gentle horses I have ever met (besides Blue) or ridden. Dempsey who you may have read about in my March Horse of the Month is an Arabian Quarter Horse mix.
