Breed of the Month – The Arabian
The Arabian is one the oldest breeds in the horse world. The Arabian was bred in the Arabian Peninsula, and dates back to 2,500 B.C. They were used in the desert traveling from one oasis to the next. Arabians were used in breeding for most of the breeds we know today, including the Thoroughbred (check out my Thoroughbred blog to find out more). Arabians are favored for their stamina and are often used in endurance riding. They also are good in jumping and in other activities.
My friend Ryleigh rides horses with me and she rides Dempsey an Arabian/Quarter horse mix. I rode Dempsey when I first started riding, he is not that fast of a pony, but if he sees you with a treat and he is in the pasture with Batman (his best bud) he canters up to you with Batman usually trotting along (Batman is quite the trotter).
I like the Arabian because they are quick, intelligent, and can have a lot stamina. You can tell it’s an Arabian by looking at its features; the two ways to tell an Arabian from the other horses are a small head and a high set tail.
